CHINA: THE WORLD' S FASTESTGROWING LED MARKET

With China set to soon become the largest LED market in the world, the government has earmarked the LED lighting industry as a key resource conservation sector. With growing interest in this market, together with rising investment in advanced energy-saving technology and solid-state lighting, high-brightness LED technology will become the country’s largest growing market. The 12th Five-Year Special Plan on the Development of SSL Technologies predicts that, by 2015:

• The LED lighting market will be worth RMB 500 billion (USD 78.6 billion).
• LED lighting products will make up 30% of the overall lighting industry.
• The government will establish 20-30 leading companies; build 20 state-level industrial bases and 50 pilot cities under the "10,000 LED Lamps in 10 Cities" program.

In November 2011, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced plans to phase out incandescent lights over five stages. The purpose of the initiative is to safeguard the development of the LED lighting industry. Incandescent lamps are due to be completely phased out of the lighting market by October 2016.
